FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alfred E. Plant Senior Apartments to Celebrate with a Groundbreaking Ceremony at Noon on Wednesday, October 27, 2010

George Howell, the Executive Director of the West Hartford Housing Authority today announced that the $21 million Alfred E. Plant Senior Housing project, which is being financed with assistance from the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority and the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development is underway.

The WHHA and WHHC will rehabilitate and expand housing at the Alfred E. Plant Senior Apartments. The project will create and preserve a total of 137 units of housing, which includes 42 newly constructed units, for low-income elderly as well as disabled citizens.

“I am pleased that WHHA and WHHC were able to partner with the state to provide safe and affordable housing for our West Hartford senior and disabled citizens. This project will provide more options as well as create quality renovated and new housing stock in our town for those living on fixed incomes,” Mr. Howell said.

He added, “There are approximately 400 units of affordable (low-income) senior housing units in the Town of West Hartford. Alfred E. Plant currently has 95 units; we will be adding 42 new housing units to the West Hartford affordable senior and disabled housing market. These new units alone will represent an increase of 10% of the West Hartford affordable senior housing now available. The Alfred E. Plant project is not only a desirable addition to the West Hartford affordable Senior and Disabled Housing market; it is a necessary and exceptional addition.”

The Alfred E. Plant Senior Housing project will receive approximately $2 million, through a 40-year federal HOME loan from the state Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) at a rate of 1 percent, as well as approximately $7 million through a 40-year loan at a rate of 4 percent and approximately $11 million in Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC/Exchange Funds) from the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority (CHFA).
